DBT, or digital breast tomosynthesis, provides healthcare providers with greater accuracy in diagnosing breast cancer. The quality of the technology continues to evolve, delivering even more accurate exams.

Most DBT systems are used to conduct narrow-angle exams. Newer, two-view wide-angle systems are creating even better images, increasing detection and reducing recall rates.

A study published in the American Journal of Roentgenology poses the question: can DBT replace full-field digital mammography (FFDM)? In the study, 29 of 31 readers performed better with DBT than FFDM. Regardless of breast density, the DBT performed more accurately.

The conclusion of the report says: “Reader performance in breast cancer detection is significantly higher with wide-angle two-view DBT independent of FFDM, verifying the robustness of DBT as a sole view. However, results of perception studies in the vision sciences support the inclusion of an overview image.”

Best Viewing Technology

You can significantly improve your patient care and workflow by partnering with a vendor that has the latest DBT technology and other tools that improve the way you access, store and share your medical imaging, including mammography studies.

When you use the software-as-a-service model, you can gain access to many tools that you have zero administration duties over. For example, the right provider can give you access to the following:

  • Automatic initialization of all preferred settings and positions
  • Multi-modality
  • Horizontal and oblique masking
  • Reference markers for lesion positions

Working with the right vendor, you can sign up for a subscription service that only offers what you need. By doing this, you’re not paying for things you won’t use.
